Becky's Best Bungalow Bets for July 3, 2022: Top 10 Ice Cream Shops in the Heights!

Hello BBBB Friends:

Happy 4th of July! BBBB is taking a break this week but I thought it would be fun to give a shout-out to our local Heights ice cream shops. The Heights is churning up new, highly creative ice cream from artisan to alcohol-infused to savory yet sweet offerings. I gave up trying to rank them, they all have unique offerings. Enjoy!

As far as real estate goes, I’ve updated our stats so be sure to keep scrolling down to see price improvements, new contracts, and final sales for those homes that are Still on My List.

Let’s go look at houses or talk about selling yours!!!

In Alphabetical Order – All Are Worthy!

Aqua S

  • 506 Yale Unit D
  • Most popular flavor: Sea Salt
  • Most unique flavor: Durian
  • Cost per pint: $9
  • Soft serve ice cream- swirl and twirl flavors
  • Kids (and you) will enjoy watching the cotton candy wrap being made
  • Made inhouse w/all natural ingredients
  • Locally owned franchise

I’ve always wondered about Durian, the melon that is banned on public transportation in South Asia because it smells. Apparently, you either think it smells ok and tastes weirdly good, or it will be the worst thing you’ve tasted in your life. I actually liked it, my son, not so much.

Cloud 10 Creamery

  • 711 A Heights Blvd
  • Most popular flavor: Nutella w/Marshmallows or Brown Sugar cookies & cream
  • Most unique flavor: White chocolate corn w/blueberry jam (seasonal)
  • Cost per pint: $9
  • All-natural flavors & ingredients, no food coloring
  • Locally owned-4 locations (ice cream made in common kitchen & distributed)

Located in the Heights Merchantile shopping/dining area. If they are out of the White Chocolate Corn w/Blueberry jam, try the Dark Chocolate & Passion Fruit Coconut Milk Sorbet. You can also find pints of Cloud 10 ice cream at HEB.

******

Dolce Neve Gelato

  • 4721 N Main St
  • Most popular flavor: Crema Dolce Neva (custard with lemon zest)
  • Most unique flavor: Yellow Watermelon Sorbet
  • Cost per pint: $14
  • Gelato, sorbet, and frozen custard
  • Austin-based, family owned, ice creams handcrafted in house

Located next to Hughie’s Vietnamese Grill. Hands down my favorite shop. The flavors are rich and intense. Try the pistachio, it’ll blow your mind!

******

Fat Cat Creamery

  • 1901 N Shepherd #3
  • Most popular flavor: Cat’s Meow Mexican Vanilla
  • Most unique flavor: Milk Chocolate Stout w/ Texas Beer
  • Cost per pint: $9
  • Locally sourced products and environmentally friendly packaging
  • Locally owned

Fat Cat was one of the original Heights ice cream shops to offer artisanal ice cream. The new Garden Oaks location offers more flavors as well as “boozy shakes & ice cream floats”. (Just sayin’ 😉)

******

Honeychild’s Sweet Creams

  • 600 North Shepherd (MKT)
  • Most popular flavor: Buttermilk
  • Most unique flavor: Blueberry Jalapeno Cornbread. or Big Red (tastes just like the soda)
  • Cost per pint: $10
  • Locally owned by Heights resident
  • Products are locally sourced and handcrafted in house

Honeychild’s is a welcome newcomer to MKT. If you haven’t been to MKT for shopping and dining, you should definitely go and round out your visit with a cone!

******

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams

  • 375 W 19th St
  • Most popular flavor: Gooey Butter Cake (Cream cheese ice cream layered with crumbles of vanilla cake with a swirl of caramel-butterscotch sauce)
  • Most unique flavor: Everything Bagel (Savory, tastes just like an Everything Bagel from Einsteins)
  • Cost per pint: $12
  • No synthetic flavors or dyes
  • Corporate-owned, ice creams made in Ohio (Just FYI the founder, Jeni, has a James Beard award)

Located in the former Carter & Cooley Deli across from Torchy’s Tacos. When I asked one of the employees what makes this shop special, she said “Jeni’s is inclusive and kind. It is a special place to work”. 😍 You can also find Jeni’s at Whole Foods and on Amazon.

******

Rita’s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard

  • 2802 White Oak
  • Most popular flavor: Mango Italian Ice
  • Most unique flavor: Black Cherry Cheesecake Custard
  • Cost per pint: $7
  • Italian Ices & Frozen Custard made in house
  • Locally owned franchise

My personal favorite flavor is the Mint Chocolate Chip. Try a Gelati which is layers of Italian Ice & Custard.

Sweet Bribery

  • 250 W 19th St
  • Most popular flavor: Mint Chocolate Chip (made with fresh peppermint and Andes Chocolate Mints)
  • Most unique flavor: Cereal Milk Cinnamon Toast Crunch (cereal is soaked in milk and the milk is the basis of the ice cream)
  • Cost per pint: $12
  • Locally owned, products made in house

Pair your ice cream with champagne wine or beer or try an adult float.

******

Smoosh

  • 718 W 18th St
  • Most popular flavor: Cookie’s & Cream
  • Most unique flavor: Chocolate Crunch (dairy-free oatmeal based)
  • Cost per pint: $7
  • Ice creams are crafted in a central location and distributed to stores
  • Locally owned. Heights is the original store

While the flavors are basic, Smoosh is about the experience. Pick your baked goody (cookie, donut, churros & waffles) and ice cream and it will be smooshed into a sandwich for easy eating.

******

Underground Creamery (links to Instagram)

  • Various pop-up locations-sometimes in the Heights
  • Most popular flavor: Apparently all of them
  • Cost per pint: $12-13
  • Locally owned

Underground Creamery is the brainchild of Josh Deleon who personally produces hundreds of pints of artisanal ice cream each week. Notice of when the ice cream is ready for sale can only be found on the Underground Creamery Instagram page and it’s presented as a riddle. Solve the riddle and go to https://www.hotplate.com/undergroundcreamer at the right time and you will be able to order pints for pickup. Inventory sells out in minutes so you have to play the game to score the goods. (Or, you can enter your cell phone number at this website to be notified when the product is available, but what is the fun in that?)
